The localization process of the automotive LED lighting industry chain continues to accelerate, from upstream LED chips and packaging devices, to optical lenses, driving power supplies, and then to headlight assemblies. Domestic enterprises are gradually connecting the entire chain, and automotive grade LED chips are being mass-produced, reducing the dependence of domestic car companies on overseas light source components and supporting the large-scale popularization of LED headlights.
There is a significant difference in standards between automotive LED chips and consumer lighting LED chips. During the use of vehicles, there is a wide temperature range, with exposure to sunlight in summer and low temperatures in winter, accompanied by continuous vibration and humid environments. Vehicle standard LED chips have strict requirements for lifespan, stability, and resistance to attenuation. In the early years of the domestic automotive LED market, high-end automotive grade chips mostly relied on overseas suppliers, while domestic manufacturers focused more on assembling car light assemblies and purchasing external products for core light source components. Once there is a fluctuation in the supply chain, the supply cycle and cost will be affected.
In recent years, domestic chip companies have continued to invest in automotive grade LED research and development, optimize chip materials and packaging processes, complete long-term reliability testing, gradually obtain certification from host factories, and achieve mass supply. Domestic automotive grade LED chips are widely used in ordinary LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and interior LED ambient lights; In the field of matrix LED partitioned light sources, domestic chips have also entered the stage of sample verification and small batch loading.
The car headlight assembly company stated that the localization of upstream LED chips brings multiple benefits. On the one hand, local supply can shorten the delivery cycle and quickly respond to the needs of car companies for redesign and project development; On the other hand, through collaborative development between upstream and downstream, car light manufacturers can work with chip companies to optimize optical solutions, adjust LED bead layout for domestic road conditions, optimize heat dissipation matching, and reduce trial and error costs. In the past, chip parameters and optical modules did not match, requiring repeated modification of samples. Now, local upstream and downstream enterprises are collaborating on research and development, resulting in a significantly shortened development cycle.
The industry also objectively points out the gap, and some core components of high-end high pixel matrix LEDs still need continuous iteration. The validation cycle for automotive LED chips is very long, requiring tens of thousands of hours of aging testing to simulate the light decay of vehicles after long-term use. Some early domestically produced chip products have lower light attenuation control than mature overseas products in long-term high-temperature environments. After multiple iterations, the stability of the new generation of products has been greatly improved and gradually gained recognition from more host manufacturers.
At the market level, the rapid growth of new energy vehicles continues to drive demand for LED headlights. New energy vehicles eliminate traditional engines, and the power supply system is more suitable for low-power light sources such as LED. Almost all new cars come standard with LED external lighting. The demand for continuous LED taillights, flowing LED turn signals, cabin LED ambient lights, and LED devices for high-speed trains continues to grow.
Industry institutions predict that the size of the domestic automotive LED market will continue to grow in the coming years, and the market share of domestic chips will continue to increase. The goal of the domestic industrial chain is not only to replace imported components, but also to enhance optical design, system integration, and software control capabilities, shifting from simple hardware manufacturing to providing a complete set of LED lighting solutions. The maturity of the domestic LED car lighting industry chain will continue to reduce the production cost of intelligent LED matrix headlights, enabling more household models to be equipped with high-quality LED lighting, and driving the overall upgrading of the domestic automotive lighting industry.
